This panel can easily be removed to gain access to the microcontroller as well as the fasteners which holds the robot on the base. To keep the robot firmly situated on the base, we used machined nuts and bolts with washers. This eliminates any accidental slip or tipping over of the arm which might cause damage to the robotic arm or the base.
Another important human factor is supervision. The designed robot requires minimum supervision for safety purposes. Since the electrical components, including the power connector, motor connectors are hidden in the base and out of reach, it is safe from any kind of electrical hazards. The chances of getting electrocuted are minimized by using material that does not carry electricity (insulator) for the base manufacturing. The power connectors can easily be disconnected in an unexpected situation where safety is concerned.

Few things that should be improved for human safety factor are, using a different material for manufacturing the base. The material we used (PLA) is not a great option for this robot because the melting temperature of PLA is low. Since the robot will spend most of its time on the field under direct sunlight, the base material can easily degrade which can negatively affect the controlling devices hence hamper safety. So, improving the material to ABS which is more durable and has higher melting temperature, would be a better choice as base material. Other than that, few warning signs for hot surface, electric hazard can be used to make the robot even safer.

For safe operation of the robot, we recommend the operator to go through a training process which can ensure safe and smooth operation of the robot. knowing the emergency protocols can make the robot a much safer object around human and on the field.
Keeping human factor such as maintenance, Backup, Supervision, Inspection are important elements to consider when designing a robot for an intended purpose. Depending on the task of the robot and its purpose, human factors can vary.

For our saffron picking robot, we designed the robot keeping the human factors into consideration. The robot is designed for easy maintenance. This includes disassembling the robot for repair or to replace any broken components. Also replacing or maintaining the microcontroller, located into the base, is an easy task. Our design includes a removable separating panel in the base.
